Escola La Canaleta school in Vilaseca, Tarragona, was the first public facilities entirely built in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) at the time. This project represented a huge challenge during the project and works phases, according to the architect Manel Casellas of the 2260mm studio.
The project has impressive figures: with an area of 3,840 m2 and 1,140 m3 of timber used. The public developers (Generalitat de Catalunya) designed a lightweight construction supported by a framework of CLT panels which shortened construction times. A a result, this was the first public educational centre exclusively built in timber with huge accuracy and reduced foundations thanks to workshop manufacturing and outstanding completion times. The structure was assembled in just 31 days. All those components contributed to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the building and minimise on-site waste generation.
