The Torre Madariaga building dates to the 15th century and was originally devised as a fortress at that time. In the 17th century the adjoining palace was built to house the residential area. The building currently houses the headquarters of the Basque Biodiversity Centre, Ekoetxea. Between 2004 and 2006, it was restored using a traditional structure made of wooden forging slabs and roofs which also includes a tower with hipped glass windows. The challenge behind this project was to strike a balance between a traditional flagship building and a contemporary more modern outlook. To install timber supported by the original natural stone walls, a three-phase construction process was required to maintain the walls stiffened at all times.
